Great Times for a Great Cause

Chili & Salsa Cookoff

On September 7th at the Tyson Events Center West Parking Lot, 18 teams battled it out for bragging rights and over $2,300 in cash and prizes. Brief rain showers in the morning were not enough to deter the public from the opportunity to sample some of the best chili and salsa around at this year’s 20th Annual Chili and Salsa Cookoff. Dr. Jim Hartje’s Hawg-B-Gone Chili team won top honors for Best Chili and People’s Choice Chili. Kyle Barton’s Hog Call Chili took second with Paula Ashcraft’s Cowboy

Chili team coming in third. In the salsa division, Bruce Golden and the River City Anglers impressed the judges enough to take home first place with Kyle Barton coming in second, and Tim and Peggy DeBoer’s California Dreamin’ placing third. Paula Ashcraft’s Cowboy Chili team won the People’s Choice Award for best salsa. For the second year the Jalapeno Eating Contest was included in the event’s festivities, and for the second time Dawn Makes Strong Move bested the other participants to retain her title.
The success of this year’s event was even further increased thanks to Hawg-B-Gone Chili and California Dreamin’ generously donating their winnings back to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland.

**Rain location will be the Heritage Parking Ramp, located on 3rd Street between Jackson Street and Jones Street. Should inclement weather force a change in location, determination will generally be made Friday evening and all competitors will be phoned by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland staff.
